PCCs are typically installed close to the main power source; therefore, the fault level at this point is relatively high. To handle such conditions, the busbar system in a PCC is carefully designed to withstand both high fault levels and temperature rise, usually up to 40°C above ambient temperature.
Adequate space is provided within the PCC for easy and safe cable termination, ensuring proper installation and maintenance. Various protective devices are incorporated in the PCC to safeguard both the power source and connected equipment. These protections include:
- Short circuit protection
- Overload protection
- Earth fault protection
- Under-voltage protection
